something about me
Let me start with my name, "Sumet" also known as "Ben" Viwatmanitsakul. I graduated from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UHM) with a BFA in art, majoring in Graphic design, received a second bachelor degree in Computer Science (BSCS) and a Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS) degree from Hawai'i Pacific University (HPU). My first degree was in Commercial Art, from Thai Vichitsilp Art College in Bangkok.
Over the years I've worked in a number of different fields, starting in the travel industry in Bangkok, managing a sales team at Maximums Aviation and working on design of advertising, marketing and sales materials. In 2004, I moved to Hawaii to attend the University of Hawaii, majoring in graphic design. At UHM, I was chosen for the Hawaiian Graphics Design award by the faculty in 2008, the year I graduated from UH. Following this, I worked for a year as a graphic designer at the East-West Center developing the themes, graphics materials and documents for the Analysis and Advocacy project, an international collaboration on strengthening AIDS responses.
I've always had an interest in technology and while working at the East-West Center I also took classes in web design and programming. The explosive growth in computers and mobile devices made me realize that combining my graphics design abilities with computer skills would give me a competitive advantage. So, I signed up at Hawaii Pacific University to get a degree in Computer Science and then followed that with a Master's degree in Information Systems. During my time in school, I served as team leader for numerous web design projects with both the State of Hawaii and with private firms, such as Designing with Light. I really enjoyed both the management and technical aspects of this kind of work. While enrolled in my coursework I've taken on a number of internship positions, including one at Design Research Corporation in Honolulu, where I’ve now been working over 4 years doing user interface design.
My goal is to continue pursuing a career in innovative interface design and software development that allows me to use my computer and graphic design skills to the fullest and to keep learning as technology changes in the future.
